The government has signed an agreement with MTCC for the company to construct the a court complex in Hulhumale', which will become the largest of its kind yet in Maldives.

The signing ceremony was held at the Housing Ministry, with State Minister Yoosuf Abdul Ghafoor signing on behalf of the ministry, and Managing Director Ahmed Saudee signing on behalf of MTCC.

According to the Housing Ministry, the complex will be developed on the 29,490 square foot area next to the Central Park in Hulhumale' Phase 1, and was awarded to MTCC to be completed within 720 days. The project has a total cost of MVR 699.8 million.

The Housing Ministry said the building will have 14 floors, and is designed to accommodate the High Court, Civil Court, Criminal Court, Family Court, Drug Court, Juvenile Court and the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA).

Once the project is finished, the ministry said the issue of a lack of space for the judicial sector will see a solution, along with an inclusion of modern facilities and will include arrangements that will be convenient for judges, staff and the public seeking judicial services.

The courts in Male' have been experiencing space constraints for years. While many courts operate out of separate buildings, the Justice Building is seeing major space constraints as well.

The Justice Building houses some Family Court divisions and the Civil Court. The Juvenile Court operates out of a separate building. The High Court operates out of Theemuge, the former Presidential Palace.

Additionally, the Criminal Court and Drug Court are temporarily operating out of a previous Covid-19 facility in Hulhumale' that has since undergone repairs.

Solving space constraints faced by the judiciary is a pledge of the current government.
