Two Maldivians have been arrested in Sri Lanka in relation to a drug case.
Two Maldivian men were arrested for smuggling drugs via air travel to Sri Lanka, Mihaaru News reports. The report further names the two suspects as Hassan Abdulla, Niru, F. Nilandhoo, and Mohamed Shaafee Bin Ahmed, H. Palmeria.
A Sri Lankan newspaper has reported that a 40 year old Maldivian man was arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport last Wednesday. It has been learned that this was Hassan Abdulla, accused of smuggling drugs into Sri Lanka.
The article cited Sri Lankan Police and said that the man had been arrested while in possession of 602g of crystal meth (Ice) which he had attempted to conceal by tying on to his body.
Sri Lankan police said that Hassan Abdulla was arrested based on an intelligence report that he was attempting to smuggle drugs into Sri Lanka via Maldives.
When questioned, Hassan Abdulla admitted that he had smuggled in the drugs to hand over to a person who ran a large-scale Ice sales operation in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan police said that a further arrest had been made based on information received from Hassan Abdulla. The second man, a 28 year old Maldivian, was arrested from a hotel in Colombo. It has been learned that this second man is Shaafee.
Police said that 607g of Ice was also found in Shaafee's room.
The Negombo Magistrate Court has placed Hassan Abdulla and Shaafee in remand in custody for an additional 14 days.
