WAMCO has reduced the amount of waste it can receive after a fire at its Thilafushi facility on Sunday night forced the closure of part of the site.

In a statement issued yesterday, the company said the fire at the Thilafushi Regional Waste Management Facility disrupted daily operations after sections of the site had to be closed.

The incident has affected transfer facilities in Male', Hulhumale' and Vilimale'. As a result, the amount of waste accepted at the stations has been reduced.

"The incident has affected various services provided from Thilafushi, especially the operations of the Male', Hulhumale' and Vilimale' transfer facilities. We have been forced to reduce the amount of waste received by these stations," WAMCO said.

The company said it is working to restore normal operations and is monitoring all of its service sites while taking the necessary measures to minimize disruption.

WAMCO apologized for the inconvenience caused to customers in the Greater Male' area and said every effort was being made to restore services as quickly as possible.

The fire broke out at around 10.20pm on Sunday and was brought under control by about 8am on Monday.

Firefighters from the Thilafushi and Male' fire stations extinguished the blaze. Crews remained at the site after the fire was put out to continue operations.
