President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has sent congratulations to Andrew Burnham, new Prime Minister of the UK. 

In a letter sent to Burnham, President Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives' strong commitment to its historic partnership with the UK, highlighting shared democratic values, human rights and close people-to-people ties. He also expressed appreciation for the UK's long-standing contributions to the Maldives' socio-economic development, according to the President's Office. 

President Muizzu said he looks forward to working closely with Prime Minister Burnham to further strengthen the Maldives-UK partnership, expressing hope for an early meeting to explore new avenues of cooperation benefitting both nations. 

The letter concluded with President Muizzu extending his personal good wishes to the Prime Minister and conveying hopes for the continued peace, progress and wellbeing of the people of UK. 

Burnham has served as an MP from 2001 to 2017. He has also filled ministerial positions under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.
