The parents of 15-year-old Jenna Chan, who died during a school trip to the Maldives, have filed a negligence lawsuit against the school she attended, St. Joseph's Institution International (SJI International).

According to Jenna's parents, Dr. Jennifer Liaw and Alan Chan, they were ultimately forced to pursue legal recourse because their efforts over the past 20 months working with the school to uncover the truth behind their daughter's death failed to produce a satisfactory answer.

"This is not what we wanted," Dr. Liaw said.

She stated that for a long time, they had requested the school to help discover what happened in order to ensure that such a tragic incident does not happen to another child. However, the grieving parents of the child stated that all doors were closed.

"The purpose of this lawsuit is accountability, and to make Jenna the last child to depart in such an incident," Liaw said.

This case seeking compensation for Jenna's death was submitted to the General Division of the High Court of Singapore on the day she would have turned 17 had she been alive.

Jenna, a Singaporean national who was studying in Grade 9 at SJI International, died on November 8, 2024. This occurred while she was snorkeling near ADh. Dhigurah, after being struck by the propeller of a dhoni that was reversing.

According to the lawsuit, Jenna entered the sea that morning with the permission of the teachers participating in the trip. Shortly after, as the dhoni's engine was started and it began moving, Jenna sustained fatal injuries upon being struck by the spinning propeller of the dhoni.

Following the incident in which the child died, school officials and the parents of the deceased child also came to the Maldives to gather information regarding the incident.

Following that incident, the government has made it mandatory to install propeller guards on the propellers of vessels taking tourists to the "South Ari Marine Protected Area" (SAMPA), or the whale shark area in ADh. Atoll.
