An agreement regarding the procurement of equipment required for fitness and recreation centers in 42 islands under the High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP) conducted in the Maldives through Indian grant assistance was signed today.
At a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives this afternoon, Minister Iruthisham Adam signed the agreement on behalf of the Maldivian government. High Commissioner of India to the Maldives, G. Balasubramanian, signed on behalf of the Indian government. Minister of Sports Abdulla Rafiu signed on behalf of the government institution implementing this project.
Speaking at today's ceremony, Foreign Minister Iruthisham stated that providing equipment to these centers is an important investment made towards the health and well-being of the island residents. She further stated that this project will pave the way to nurture a healthy and active lifestyle, and expand the avenue to attain quality good health.
Minister Iruthisham also noted that this is an advancement achieved towards empowering women and increasing equality and social participation.
Minister Rafiu stated that the fitness and recreation centers will become important hubs that pave the way for a healthy lifestyle, strengthen social bonds, and work towards the well-being of the community. Rafiu further stated that this project will expand the opportunity for people of all age groups, especially women and youth, to participate in sports and recreational activities, and will increase the well-being and fortitude of the citizens.
Speaking at the ceremony, both ministers expressed their gratitude for the generous assistance provided to the Maldives by the Indian government, and highlighted that it is something that will bring major positive changes to the Maldivian community.
