Maldives has called for Palestine to be recognized as a free and independent state, and for the protection of the holy sites in Jerusalem.

During the 2026 Conference on the Question of Jerusalem held jointly by the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP) and the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Ambassador of the Maldives to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ahmed Sareer spoke of the difficult situation Palestine is facing due to Israel, and called on Israel to immediately end all efforts in occupying Palestinian land, which goes against international law and the rulings of the International Court of Justice.

Along with that, Maldives has also called to provide financial assistance to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to empower the important work being done by the agency.

As per Sareer's statement, the legal status and historical and religious significance of Jerusalem's land can only be protected by bringing Israel's occupation to an end, and with the recognition of the right of Palestine as an independent state with East Jerusalem as Palestine's capital as per the borders prior to 1967.

Maldives continues to participate in such conferences to advocate for Palestine's rights and as a member of the OIC.
