Two people have been arrested with drugs after entering a house closed under a court order in Addu Maradhoofeydhoo and violating that order.
The police stated today that in connection with a case where a property was being used for drug consumption and peddling, the Maradhoofeydhoo Magistrate Court had issued an order to close the house 'Ummeedhuge' in Maradhoofeydhoo for 90 days. Two individuals were arrested with drugs while inside the house in violation of this order.
Those arrested in connection with this case are Ahmed Sharath, 32, of Ummeedheevilla, and Aishath Saleem, 37, of Farivilla, from the same island.
The police said that when they were presented to court last Monday to determine their remand, the court ordered both individuals to be detained for 15 days.
The police stated that Ummeedhuge in Maradhoofeydhoo was closed on the 15th of June following the order issued by the Maradhoofeydhoo Magistrate Court under the Drugs Act.
The police noted that entering or leaving places closed under a court order in this manner, without permission during the duration of the order, is an offense. The police also stated that the strictest legal actions would be taken against those who enter such places without permission and those who damage these properties in various ways.
The police have been continuously closing down various places where drugs are sold cafe-style. Last week, the police closed down two such drug cafes operated in Addu. These were a house in Addu Maradhoo named Boalhadhandhuge, and Laamiyaageaage in Addu Hithadhoo.
