A person involved in the case has stated that the 8.3 kg of drugs, smuggled by creating false bottoms and hiding them underneath the luggage of Indian nationals arriving in the Maldives from Bengaluru, were brought because someone named "Bhai" promised to pay them money.
Two Indian nationals and three Maldivians were arrested early June in connection with this case. They are:
- Mohamed Mushtaq Jamal, 29, India
- Sirajudeen Rashitha, 26, India
- Ahmed Afrah, 33, Mukurimagu, Feyrugasdoshuge, L. Gan
- Ilyas Ahmed, 42, H. Kahafathi, Male'
- Hassan Shammoon, 36, G. Heli, Male'
According to the orders issued to keep the two Indian nationals in detention until the end of their trial, they said that the luggage containing the substances suspected to be drugs was imported because a person named "Bhai" promised to give them money.
According to their detention orders, when they arrived in the Maldives from Bengaluru, India, the drugs were found in the luggage they brought when Customs x-rayed them and suspected something was concealed at the bottom of the luggage, leading to a closer inspection.
According to the court order, when the substances suspected to be drugs found in this case were analyzed, they tested positive for Tetrahydrocannabinol and Cannabinol, which are types of drugs, and the total weight of the substances was 8.3 kg.
