The governments of Maldives and Japan today signed a grant assistance agreement of 152 million yen (USD 1.02 million) to increase scholarship opportunities provided by the Japanese government to develop human resources in the Maldives.
A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that this assistance, provided under Japan's human resource development project, is aimed at executing the project to provide scholarship opportunities for Maldivian students for the upcoming financial year under the "Japanese Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS)."
At a special ceremony held today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, State Minister Shereena Abdul Samad signed the Exchange of Notes on behalf of the Maldives. Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, Ishigami Rumiko, signed on behalf of the Government of Japan.
JDS Scholarship Project
- Inaugural Year: 2020
- Objective: To equip Maldivian youth with necessary knowledge and skills, and to build capable individuals to develop the social and economic sectors of the country.
- Field: Opportunities to study for Master's degrees at top-tier universities in Japan.
- Progress so far: Under this program, 17 students have graduated with higher education degrees to date. Additionally, 9 students are currently pursuing their higher education in Japan.
In addition to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, senior officials from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Finance, Civil Service Commission, Embassy of Japan, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) participated in today's ceremony.
