The government has decided not to hold the official Independence Day reception this year as part of efforts to reduce state expenditure.

In a statement issued, the President's Office said President Dr Mohamed Muizzu had decided to forgo the annual reception marking Independence Day on 26 July.

The decision was made as a cost-saving measure, the statement said.

The President's Office confirmed that the official Independence Day ceremony will still take place at 9am on 26 July at the Social Centre, where President Muizzu is scheduled to deliver the national address.

The government also cancelled the official Independence Day reception last year, citing the need to reduce government spending.

The annual reception is traditionally hosted by the president and first lady and includes a formal greeting of invited guests followed by a banquet.
