Fenaka Managing Director Mohamed Afeef has stated the project awarded to an international company in finding a permanent solution to electricity issues across Addu islands is moving at a good pace and that it will finish within next year.

Electricity outage issues in Addu had spiked, with the project to establish a Central Power Station (CPS) being awarded to Dubai-registered company Definite Solutions on 7th March 2026.

Under the project, engines from the Anglo Belgian Corporation (ABC) will be set up in the power stations. This brand of engines are used in Europe, and are modern low-speed engines compared to the current high-speed engines in Addu, said Fenaka.

When asked a question about the project on radio program "Ahaashey Bunaanan", Afeef answered that the project had already started when he took the position of Managing Director.

Afeef said the government is doing a lot of work to solve Addu's electricity issues, with President Dr. Mohamed having instructed to do so as well. And so after taking on his current post and having clearly stated how the work is progressing, Fenaka Managing Director Afeef said the project is moving at a good speed.

"When I looked into how the project was progressing after taking on my post, I saw that the work was moving at a good pace," said Afeef.

He went on to say work is being done outside Maldives where the required generators are being built for the country, with a team from Fenaka leaving to assess the state of the work in the near future.

According to the Managing Director, such tasks need adequate time to be completed. However, he said most of the work surrounding the project will finish within this year, with the project finishing next year, allowing for a permanent solution for Addu's electricity issues.

Afeef said some changes are being brought to the project after it had started. He stated it is being done by professionals from CPS Projects in Addu by cooperating with experts from the head office.

At peak times, the linked islands of Addu require 12 megawatts of electricity. In order to provide electricity, 20 generator stacks were placed in Hithadhoo, the capacity of which is 26.8 megawatts. However, some of the generators in the stack have broken down, with electricity outage issues having increased as of late.

As per Fenaka, once the project is finished, 26.37 megawatts of electricity will be generated.
