President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu today established a separate office to resolve Malé's traffic issue.

The President's Office stated that this office, established under the name "Greater Malé Transport and Mobility Office," will operate under the Ministry of Transport. It added that there will be a separate governing board to advise the office. 

The responsibilities of the office include formulating and implementing programs to resolve the issue of traffic congestion in the Malé region, modernizing the transport system of the Malé region, finding parking facilities and other modern solutions, and playing a leading role in implementing the development of such facilities.

While a separate office was established to resolve the traffic issue, a study published last year by the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) also illustrates the extent of Malé's congestion.

According to the study commissioned by the Malé City Council, 119,472 vehicles are used in the Malé region. Ninety-three percent of those are motorcycles, which amounts to 103,300 motorcycles.

According to the report, to find a solution to the traffic, congestion, and air pollution in the Malé region, 132,230 parking slots need to be properly managed.
