Male' City Council says it removed 4,375 tonnes of waste from the capital's streets during the first six months of the year as part of its efforts to maintain cleanliness across the city.

The figures were presented in a video report during a public meeting held by the council last night.

According to the council, priority has been given to ensuring the safe collection and disposal of waste while preventing the accumulation of rubbish on the streets. Street-cleaning operations are being carried out on a continuous basis. 

The council said waste management remains one of the city's most challenging issues and that public behavior plays a significant role in addressing the problem.

As part of its enforcement efforts, the council has been identifying and taking action against individuals who illegally dump waste in public places. It has also urged members of the public to report offenders and has been publishing video footage of those caught littering or dumping rubbish illegally.

The council also highlighted several other projects completed over the past six months.

According to the report, renovation work was carried out at 45 mosques during the period.

The council also expanded cemetery capacity by adding 17,255 square feet of land to the Hulhumale' cemetery after the two cemeteries serving Male' reached capacity. Additional burial space was also created at the Aa Saharaa cemetery in Machangolhi.
