Former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has been appointed to lead a special committee tasked with implementing the party's reform roadmap.
The roadmap was developed following the MDP's defeats in the 2023 presidential election and the 2024 parliamentary elections, as part of efforts to restructure the party's organization and operations.
Fayyaz previously chaired the committee that drafted proposals for reforms to the party's constitution and internal structure. He will now head the committee responsible for implementing those recommendations.
The committee includes former Defence Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi, Hithadhoo North MP Abdulla Sodiq (Soabe), former MPs Imthiyaz Fahmy, Mohamed Rasheed Hussain (Bigey) and Yasir Abdul Latheef.
Also appointed are MDP Administrative Deputy Chair Ibrahim Waheed, Financial Deputy Chair Ahmed Abdulla, Legal Director Mauroof Ahmed and former Legal Director Mahfooz Saeed.
The appointments come as the MDP continues to reorganize its administrative structure following the election of former president Mohamed Nasheed as the party's chairperson.
As part of the restructuring, the party has established several new committees and recently launched a new office, Bodu Badhalu, headed by former MDP chairperson Hassan Latheef.
According to the party, the office was created to build support within the MDP for policy proposals put forward by Nasheed and Fayyaz.
