The Minister of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development Dr. Ismail Shafeeu has stated that teachers who obtain their Masters are unable to be given progress within their position due to the way the pay framework was created by the previous government.

While answering a question posed by Kendhoo Constituency MP Mauroof Zakir during today's Parliament sitting, Minister Shafeeu said that it was the MDP government that created the pay framework in such a way that teachers who obtain their Masters had to spend four years in their position before they are given a step-promotion. 

The minister also said that there have been step-promotions that have come in within the four years, and that the current government has given the promotions to the teachers.

And so, the minister said that as it currently stands, if teachers that have their Masters are promoted to their respective positions, their salaries would be lower than teachers that hold degrees.

"If the teachers with Masters are transferred, their salaries would be lower than the teachers with degrees. That is how the pay framework is currently set up," said Shafeeu.

According to the minister, this is an issue the government wants to solve, and it is not something they specifically want to point any fingers towards any one about.

The minister went on to say that such issues in the pay framework will be solved by discussing with principals and teachers.
