Vehicles parked in designated pedestrian areas on Hulhumale' roads have begun to be towed, police said.

Police said driving or parking any vehicle on designated walkways and pedestrian areas is prohibited, except for children’s prams and wheelchairs used by persons with disabilities.

Police advised the public not to park vehicles in such areas and said towing operations began today for vehicles found violating the rule.

The move follows increasing complaints about vehicles being parked on Hulhumalé pavements. Police said parking on pavements and both sides of roads has contributed to traffic congestion.

Driving and parking vehicles on pedestrian streets between apartment buildings in Hulhumale' has also become increasingly common, police said.
