Drugs have robbed many generations of Maldivians of their true potential, making the fight against drug trafficking and enforcement of narcotics laws a top policing priority, Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed said.
The commissioner made the remarks during a ceremony to receive 150 drug and precursor field testing kits donated to the Maldives Police Service.
The kits, valued at USD 24,000 (approximately MVR 370,080), were funded by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs of the United States Department of State and donated with the assistance of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
Speaking at the ceremony, CP Ahmed said dismantling drug trafficking networks requires strong international partnerships, well-trained officers and modern investigative tools.
He described the donated kits as more than equipment, saying they represent the trust, cooperation and shared commitment of partner countries in combating drug crime.
The field testing kits will enable officers to rapidly identify suspected narcotics and precursor chemicals at crime scenes, reducing delays in investigations and helping investigators secure crucial evidence at an early stage.
CP Ahmed said the donation supports three key objectives of the Police Strategic Plan 2024–2028 by strengthening investigative capabilities, expanding the use of science and technology in policing, and enhancing international cooperation against cross-border crime.
The ceremony was attended by Enrico Boninsegna, Mihyar Alnifaidi, diplomats, UNODC officials and senior police officers.
The commissioner thanked the US. State Department and UNODC for their support and said the Maldives Police Service would continue to strengthen international partnerships to improve public safety and security.
