Statistics have shown that MIFCO weighed MVR 11.3 million worth of fish in June.
As per MIFCO's weighing report for fishing vessels in June that was publicized today, 568 tonnes of fish were weighed by 517 fishing vessels. The company also said that this comes up to MVR 11.3 million.
MIFCO's statistics for June
- MVR 9.3 million for 484.4 tonnes of skipjack tuna.
- MVR 331,440 for 16.6 tonnes of yellowfin tuna.
- MVR 1.7 million for 67 tonnes of skipjack tuna weighing more than 15 kilograms.
In June, the lowest purchasing price of a kilogram of fish to be bought by MIFCO was raised to MVR 20. This was done due to a dip in fisheries and to better the price of fish.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said the plan is to not lower the purchasing rate for MIFCO from MVR 20 and to keep it at said rate. The President also said that is the aim.
President Muizzu has said the most important step the government has taken in setting a fair price for fish is to float the price in parallel to the market rate, and that it has seen good results. The President went on to say that even though a kilogram of fish was at MVR 16 when the price was floated, it is now at MVR 20, and that a lot of work needs to be done to hold it at that rate.
MIFCO is currently working to release payments to fishermen within 48 hours of fish being weighed.
