Statistics from Customs have shown that they have seized 324 kilograms of drugs over the last two and a half years.
Customs publicized the amount of drugs they have seized yesterday that have been smuggled into Maldives from 2021 until now.
Statistics show that from 2021 to 2023, 247 kilograms of drugs were seized spanning 116 cases.
From 2024 to June 2026, 324 kilograms of drugs were seized spanning 147 cases. Customs stated that within this time frame, drug cases had increased by 27 percent, and that the weight of the drugs that were seized had increased by 31 percent.
According to the statistics of drugs that have been seized, the amount of drugs that have been seized in the last two and a half years is higher compared to the 2019 to 2023 time frame.
There have been many instances years ago where attempts to smuggle in hundreds of kilograms of drugs by sea in one attempt have been seized. However, many people have lately been arrested in their attempts to smuggle large amounts of drugs into the country by air. In cases such as these, the majority of those who have been arrested are expatriates.
