President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said housing allocations under the government's "Housing for All" programme will be based on eligibility rather than political influence.

Speaking at a series of press briefings at the President's Office on Monday, President Muizzu said the government is working to ensure the allocation of flats and land is carried out fairly and transparently.

He said the recipient lists would be compiled in a way that minimizes complaints and ensures housing is awarded to those who are most deserving.

"In the past, flats and land were allocated to certain people through the influence of different parties. We are giving the assurance that there will be no such complaints this time," the President said.

President Muizzu also said parliament members would not be able to influence housing allocations by lobbying ministers or officials.

"That will not happen now. Many such requests used to come through MPs, but no MP, minister or employee of the President's Office will be able to secure land or flats for anyone through influence now," he said.

The President said officials are verifying information submitted by applicants before finalising the allocation lists.

Staff at the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure are reviewing supporting documents, including proof of residence in Male' and declarations relating to land ownership, using information obtained from other government agencies and local councils.

President Muizzu said the verification process is being carried out around the clock and expressed hope that the final recipient lists would be published before the end of the year. However, he said it was not yet possible to provide a specific date.

Applications for land and flats under the Housing for All programme closed on 15 June, with a record 58,505 applications submitted through the Housing Portal.

According to government figures, the applications include 35,930 requests for flats and 22,575 for residential land.

The programme aims to provide 7,900 flats and 15,000 residential plots measuring 1,250 square feet each.
