President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has submitted the nomination of Elections Commission (EC) member Mohamed Shakeel to Parliament for approval as President of the commission.

The President's letter seeking parliamentary approval was presented during today's sitting and referred to the Independent Institutions Committee for review.

Shakeel was recently appointed to the Elections Commission following the resignation of former EC President Mohamed Zahid.

Before his appointment to the commission, Shakeel served as Managing Director of the Hajj Corporation.

He previously held two positions at the Elections Commission, serving as both Director General and a member. He resigned as a member in 2018 after three years in the post.

Speaking before the Independent Institutions Committee, Shakeel said he had resigned because he did not believe the commission provided an environment in which he could work independently.
