A measles-rubella (MR) vaccination campaign began in the Greater Male' area yesterday as health authorities step up efforts to contain a recent outbreak of measles.
The campaign follows a series of precautionary measures introduced after cases of measles began rising in May.
According to Health Protection Agency (HPA), the first phase of the campaign is targeting healthcare workers and children under the age of 18.
Vaccinations for these groups are being administered from Saturday to Monday at the following locations:
- Urban Primary Health Care (UPHC)
- Hulhumale' Hospital
- Senahiya Military Hospital
- Vilimale Hospital
HPA said vaccination schedules for atolls and other islands will be announced separately by the respective health facilities.
Although Maldives achieved measles-free status in 2017, health authorities have recently confirmed 22 cases of the disease and are working to prevent further community transmission.
HPA has urged anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough and a red rash to seek medical attention immediately. People with suspected measles are also advised to self-isolate until test results are available and to avoid crowded places while symptoms are present.
Since achieving measles-free status, most cases detected in Maldives have involved infections among foreign nationals. However, the current outbreak has also affected Maldivian citizens, prompting a broader public health response.
