Changes have been brought about regarding the installment of propeller guards for marine vessels that enter the protected area at AA. Atoll (SAMPA: South Ari Marine Protected Area) known for being home to whale sharks and rays.

SAMPA was listed as a protected area in 2009. The area covers the north west reef of ADh. Rangali, to the outer reefs edge extending one kilometer outward of the islands in the northern corner of AA. Dhigurah. Marine vessels take hundreds of tourists out to this area, which is home to many whale sharks.

However, the area has been the site of several serious accidents. Last year, one person was killed after being struck and run over by a speedboat. Following the incident, propeller guards were made mandatory on vessels.

And so, the government announced in February 2025 that it is mandatory for propeller guards to be installed.

As per an announcement from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), all marine vessels that have registered before 30th June and all vessels that request registration before 30th June have to install propeller guards before that date, with them now having been given a grace period.

"Upon reaching the deadlines, only marine vessels that have propeller guards installed can apply to register for entry into the SAMPA area. However, marine vessels that have been registered before 30th June or have applied to register to this authority before 30th June are being given a grace period," as was written in the statement.

The ERA has requested marine vessels to register before the deadline. The ERA also said that those who violate the guidelines set in the area will have action taken against them.

The ERA stated that vessel registration can be done via "oneGov", and are to ensure their vessels are in line with the SAMPA management plan's guidelines before registering.
