The government has announced that the second airport for Laamu Atoll will be built at Isdhoo-Kalaidhoo.

Building a second airport at Laamu Atoll is a presidential pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. However, the island where the airport is to be built was not determined until now.

Islands in the atoll had various demands regarding which island the airport was to be built on. The government received submissions to build the airport near L. Maavah and L. Mendhoo.

With these demands, President Muizzu stated that the airport will be developed after taking the future into account and in a way sustainable development can be achieved. The President also stated that the best path in the progression of Maldivian tourism will be to build the airport in an area where a high number of resorts can be developed.

According to a video that was publicized by the Housing Ministry, Laamu Atoll's second airport will be built at Isdhoo-Kalaidhoo, which is one of the larger islands in Maldives. It is the northernmost island in the atoll. 

As per the ministry, there is potential to move a population to and develop Isdhoo-Kalaidhoo. The ministry said that the island needs the opportunity for a complete economy to be built, and to benefit via tourism from the natural beauty surrounding the island.

It takes 40 minutes to fly from Isdhoo-Kalaidhoo to Laamu Atoll's only airport at Kadhdhoo. The ministry also said that with the new airport, it would ease the lives of residents at Dhanbidhoo and Maabaidhoo.

The atoll's only airport, at L. Kadhdhoo, is the oldest domestic airport in Maldives.
