Hanimaadhoo Council, currently in charge of managing Hirimaradhoo, has presented HDh. Hirimaradhoo residents with the opportunity to note down their names if they want to relocate to HA. Hoarafushi.
According to an announcement from Hirimaradhoo Council, Hoarafushi Council held a meeting and decided to extend an invite to Hirimaradhoo residents who wish to relocate to Hoarafushi.
Hanimaadhoo Council pointed out a decision from the previous Hoarafushi Council, which was made on 27th March right before the previous council's term had come to an end.
While referring to a letter sent by Hoarafushi Council at the time, Hanimaadhoo Council stated that they have begun noting down the names of those who want to relocate to Hoarafushi. They opened up this opportunity yesterday and will continue for 30 days.
The announcement reads that those who want their names noted down can go to the Hanimaadhoo ward office (formerly the Hirimaradhoo Council office) or Hanimaadhoo Council.
Emailing the council or calling them at 4002064 are also options.
Hoarafushi Council said that as it was the previous council that had decided to allocate plots to Hirimaradhoo residents who wish to relocate to Hoarafushi, the new council has not held a discussion regarding the matter. However, they said they will check how many Hirimaradhoo residents want to relocate and cooperate on the matter.
Due to a small population, the government announced in February 2025 that the residents of Hirimaradhoo were to relocate to Hanimaadhoo. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu changed the status of Hirimaradhoo to an uninhabited island on 17th May, and brought the island under the care of Hanimaadhoo Council.
Hirimaradhoo has the smallest population out of the 13 islands in Haa Dhaalu Atoll. According to the latest census, the island has a population of 293 people, which are 157 men and 136 women.
While the decision has been made to relocate Hirimaradhoo residents, the government has stated that they will continue to establish basic services as long as people continue living there.
