The former Managing Director of Hajj Corporation, Mohamed Shakeel, was appointed as a member of the Elections Commission (EC) today.
The President's Office stated that during a special ceremony held at the office today, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu appointed Shakeel as a member of the EC.
At the ceremony, Shakeel took the oath of membership for the EC and signed the declaration of the oath. The President also handed over the official letter of membership to him.
The oath of membership was administered to Shakeel by Supreme Court Judge Mohamed Saleem.
Shakeel applied for membership in the EC, which oversees political parties and electoral matters, for the seat left vacant after the commission's most recent president, Mohamed Zahid, resigned last month.
Among the individuals who applied for the membership, Shakeel's name was forwarded to the Parliament as the preferred nominee by President Muizzu. The Parliament granted its approval to him yesterday.
Shakeel has previously worked at the EC as well. In addition to the post of Director General at the commission, he also served as a member of the commission. After working as a member for three years, he resigned in 2018.
Shakeel stated in the parliamentary committee that he resigned from the EC at the time because there was no environment within the commission to work independently.
After serving as the Managing Director of Hajj Corporation since the beginning of this government, he resigned from that post yesterday upon receiving parliamentary approval for the EC membership.
