Managing Director of Hajj Corporation, Mohamed Shakeel, has resigned from his post today following approval from Parliament to appoint him to the Elections Commission (EC).
In a post on X, the Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB) stated that as Shakeel had submitted his resignation from the post of Managing Director and from his membership on the Board of Directors of Hajj Corporation, his resignation has been accepted and he has been removed from the position.
Shakeel applied for membership in the EC, which oversees political parties and electoral matters, for the seat left vacant after the commission's most recent president, Mohamed Zahid, resigned last month.
Among the individuals who applied for the membership, Shakeel's name was forwarded to the Parliament as the preferred nominee by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Shakeel has previously worked at the EC as well. In addition to the post of Director General at the commission, he also served as a member of the commission. After working as a member for three years, he resigned in 2018.
Shakeel stated in the parliamentary committee that he resigned at the time because there was no environment within the commission to work independently.
In addition to serving as the Managing Director of Hajj Corporation, Shakeel previously held the position of Registrar of the PNC as well as serving as a Senate member of the party. Shakeel has also resigned from his positions within the PNC.
