The Minister of Health, Family and Welfare Geela Ali has stated that they are working to build a multi-specialty hospital for treating cancer in Hulhumale' Phase 2.
During former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government, a hospital specialized to treat cancer was set to be built in L. Gan. However, the current government has decided to build the hospital in the Male' region.
In 2024, the Health Ministry announced a feasibility study to build the hospital on the plot next to Dharumavantha Hospital.
While answering a question regarding when the hospital will be finished and begin service by North Galolhu Constituency MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu) during today's Parliament sitting, Minister Geela said that work is being done to build a 25-bed multi-specialty hospital in Hulhumale' Phase 2 and that construction of the hospital will finish in 2028 and will begin serving the public.
"The government is prioritizing work regarding a hospital that specializes in treating cancer. Work is being done to establish a 25-bed multi-specialty hospital that provides cancer treatments in Hulhumale' Phase 2, and will include maternal and child health services," said Geela.
While the minister answered the question regarding the current status of the work into the cancer hospital, the minister did not mention whether the plan for the cancer-specialty hospital had seen any changes.
The minister said that while the Hulhumale' Phase 2 hospital will be built before 2028 and begin serving the public, she said that it will also offer all basic treatment regarding cancer as well.
"This project will be split into different stages and will finish by 2028. It will offer all required basic cancer treatments and diagnosis services, such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy and PET/CT scans," said Geela.
According to the minister, cancer treatment services have been established at some hospitals in Maldives. She also said that chemotherapy is available at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and Hulhumale' Hospital, and that those hospitals have 9 beds specifically for that purpose.
"This service have been established at Addu, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Raa Atoll and Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, with it being available at private hospitals in Maldives as well, stated Geela.
Along with that, visiting doctors from India's Amrita Hospital come to Maldives once every month and sometimes once every two months to Hulhumale' Hospital, and provide treatment as well.
