Criminal Court has sentenced three people to prison over the killing of a newborn baby born to a minor in a case that occurred on a central Maldives island seven years ago.
Those convicted are Aishath Shaira of Greenlight, Alifu Dhaalu Maamigili; Mohamed Imthiyaz of Sosunvilla, Thaa Madifushi; and Moosa Ahsam of Shadow, Haa Alifu Filladhoo.
According to the charges filed in connection with the 2019 case, Ahsam was accused of intentional homicide. Shaira faced two charges: knowingly failing to report the sexual abuse of a child and participating in the intentional homicide of the infant. Imthiyaz was charged with participating in the intentional homicide.
Criminal Court convicted all three and handed down sentences on Thursday.
Shaira was sentenced to a total of three years' imprisonment. The sentence includes two years and six months for participating in the killing of her grandchild and six months for knowingly failing to report the sexual abuse of a child.
Ahsam was sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted of the infant's murder. The court also ordered him to observe a 60-day kaffara fast as atonement. After deducting the period already spent in remand, he has three years and seven months remaining on his sentence.
Ahsam is also accused of sexually abusing the minor involved in the case.
Imthiyaz was convicted of participating in the homicide and sentenced to two years and six months in prison. He was also ordered to observe a 60-day kaffara fast.
