An operation to search Maafushi Prison has begun today.

The Maldives Correctional Service stated that a cooperative search operation with the police is underway.

However, no additional information about the search was given.

Due to prohibited items being smuggled into the prison and prisoners conducting scams, search operations at Maafushi Prison have been held previously.

Last Tuesday, a state-of-the-art baggage screening machine was placed at Maafushi Prison for the first time, with the machine being used to screen items brought in by those entering the prison and those placed in remand when they are brought in for the first time, items sent by families for those individuals and for screening family and those who come to the prison for isolated meetings.

A state-of-the-art body screening machine was placed in Maafushi Prison for the first time in February 2026. The machine was installed, training conducted and put to use in April 2026 as scam cases have been on the rise, with items such as phones having been smuggled into prison to conduct said scams.
