The police on Friday handed over two foreign journalists, who were working illegally in the Maldives, to Immigration.
In a statement, Maldives Police Service stated that one of the journalists was of Indian nationality while the other was from the United Kingdom. According to foreign reports, the journalists in question work for the Paris-based international news agency, Agence France-Presse (AFP).
Police said that the duo were in violation of the Immigration Act, which states that expatriates require a special visa to work as reporters in the Maldives.
The archipelago made international headlines after the government announced a 15-day state of emergency last Monday in the wake of a shock ruling issued by the Supreme Court on February 1 to release political prisoners. While the top court has revised its verdict, several nations and foreign bodies have called on the Maldives to lift the state of emergency.
