Services previously provided by Atoll Councils upon collecting a fee have been halted due to legal questions that have arisen following the dissolution of the councils.
Atoll Councils previously provided services including vehicle licensing, annual fees, and Department of National Registration (DNR) services.
However, with the amendments brought to the Decentralization Act, Atoll Councils were dissolved on the 17th of last month, and those establishments were transformed into Atoll Offices of the Local Government Authority (LGA).
These Atoll Offices are currently announcing that transport services have been halted starting today.
It is understood that transport services were halted due to a legal question that has arisen.
Councils are entities that possess the legal authority to provide services upon collecting a fee under the law. However, the LGA does not possess that authority.
No comment has been received from the LGA so far regarding the matter.
