Some Parliament super majority People's National Congress (PNC) MP's stated today that the current economy is not in a state where it can support salary increments for councilors.

During the debate regarding South Galolhu Constituency MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem's resolution to increase the salary of councilors, the MP that spoke against the resolution the most was Baarah Constituency MP Ibrahim Shujau.

He alleged that a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP would not submit the resolution in good faith. Nevertheless, a majority of PNC does support the salary increment and that before the current term ends, Shujau said that this change will come about. However, the current economy does not have the space for the salary of political members to be increased, said Shujau.

"The reason why we do not support this resolution is because it is in bad faith. This country's economy does not currently allow for the increase of political members. Even so, as I have said before, we as a party do support it. This change will hopefully be seen within this term," said Shujau.

South Feydhoo Constituency MP Ibrahim Didi (IB) stated that MDP's government ended after Maldives was "drowned" and that PNC is working to reverse it in an economic sense.

"Those who have drowned the country are now working to destroy it even further while we attempt to save it," said Didi.

Milandhoo Constituency MP Hassan Mufeed said that questions have come up as to why MDP did not raise the salary of councilors when they had two terms in office to do so. He questioned why they should work to bring such amendments while they are the opposition.

As per North Thinadhoo Constituency MP Saudulla Hilmi, he supports compensation appropriate to the honorable work that is done but that it is not currently possible economically.
