Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has raised various allegations against the government, with their National Council deciding to conduct nation-wide protests on Thursday.

Their allegations include the government starting many projects but having stopped them, firing people from their posts due to political reasons and filing political charges.

The resolution that was submitted by MDP secretariats during the first meeting after former President Mohamed Nasheed was elected as MDP's Chairperson includes three main allegations, with the first being development projects being stopped.

According to the resolution, when the MDP government's term came to an end in 2023, there were efforts related to basic services such as electricity, water and sewage and other development projects that had been started which were "moving at a quick pace". Nevertheless, the resolution reads that the projects were stopped once the government had changed and that some of the projects had seen 90 percent completion at the time.

With these allegations, the resolution further states that the projects that have been stopped should be handed over to the councils and that MDP will work together with the councils to finish the projects.

The second allegation stated in the resolution reads that many individuals continue being dismissed from their posts over political reasons. MDP's allegations include the suspension of those who take part in MDP activities, steps being taken to transfer staff to other islands and that those things are being done in violation of state company regulations.

The nation-wide protests on Thursday is in connected to this allegation, as per the resolution.

The third allegation is that the government raises political charges against those who make use of freedom of speech and right of assembly. While connecting this allegation, MDP has decided to offer legal aid to those who need to defend themselves against such charges.
