A state-of-the-art baggage screening machine has been installed at Maafushi Prison for the first time.

The newly placed machine began being used when Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan paid a visit to the prison yesterday.

Maldives Correctional Service stated that the machine was gifted to them by MACL in order to strengthen security.

They also said that prison officers have been given special training in using the machine by Customs staff.

The machine will be able to screen items brought in by those entering the prison and those placed in remand when they are brought in for the first time, items sent by families for those individuals and for screening family and those who come to the prison for isolated meetings.

A state-of-the-art body screening machine was placed in Maafushi Prison for the first time in February 2026. The machine was installed, training conducted and put to use in April 2026.

Scam cases have been on the rise as items such as phones have been smuggled into the prison, with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stating previously that the installation and use of the machines will lead to a stop of scam calls from prison and other related offenses.
