Former Mayor of Addu Abdulla Sodiq (Sobe) has been sworn in as a member of Parliament after his victory in the North Hithadhoo constituency by-election.
Sodiq was sworn in earlier this morning at an oath-taking ceremony held before the Parliament's sitting.
The North Hithadhoo seat was vacated after the Supreme Court ruled that former constituency MP and PNC member Ahmed Sinan had lost his seat as he and another individual failed to pay back an MVR 2.5 million loan taken from the Maldives Islamic Bank as per the court ruling in October, 2024.
Sodiq was elected after running against Ahmed Saeed (Soda) on the side of PNC in the by-election held on 6th June.
After a competitive campaign, Sodiq won the election with a difference of 62 votes.
While Sodiq received 1,375 votes, Saeed received 1,313 votes.
Sodiq previously held the position of Mayor of Addu for 10 years, from 2011 to 2021. After that, he was the State Minister of the Planning Ministry during the most recent MDP government.
