President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the government's commitment to promoting voluntary blood donation, recognizing the vital contribution of donors in saving lives and supporting the healthcare system.
In a message shared on X to mark World Blood Donor Day, President Muizzu praised voluntary blood donors for their selfless contributions, noting that their generosity helps ensure timely treatment for patients with chronic conditions and those requiring emergency medical care.
He said blood remains an irreplaceable resource despite advances in medicine and technology, and stressed that voluntary blood donation is essential for safeguarding public health, strengthening healthcare services and improving national emergency preparedness.
The President also highlighted the unique challenges faced by the Maldives as a geographically dispersed island nation, noting that timely access to blood can be critical during medical emergencies.He said fostering a culture of solidarity and shared responsibility is important to protecting the health and well-being of all Maldivians.
First Lady Sajidha Mohamed in a post on X, paid tribute to blood donors for their acts of kindness and compassion.She said blood donation offers hope to patients and their families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives, adding that each donation has the potential to make a life-changing difference.
The First Lady noted that saving lives does not always require grand gestures and that a simple act of kindness can have a profound impact on others.
Eligibility for blood donation
- Individuals above the age of 18 who are in good health and weigh above 45 kgs
- Donors must have a normal hemoglobin level, typically around 12.5 g/dL for females and 13.0 g/dL for males
- Donors must not be pregnant or breastfeeding individuals
- Those who test positive for HIV (AIDS virus) or certain other transmissible infections like hepatitis cannot donate blood.
- Blood donated every 3 months
- Donors must get a minimum of 5 to 6 hours of sleep the night before donation
- Donors must have had a balanced meal at least an hour before donation
