Ahmed Moosa (Katheeb Dhombe), a long-serving island chief of Faafu Atoll Nilandhoo, has passed away at the age of 100.

The family had celebrated his 100th birthday in October last year.

Katheeb Dhombe served as the island chief for many years and was also known for his skills as a navigator, having travelled on ships on overseas voyages. He was widely regarded as a multi-skilled community figure, working in areas including sewing, carpentry, sailing, Dhivehi medicine and funeral services.

He had three marriages and 16 children, 14 of whom are still alive. He is also survived by 72 grandchildren, 118 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

Among his children are Dr Abdul Aziz Ahmed, a heart disease specialist; former MP Ali Ahmed; State Minister for Youth Affairs Abdul Latheef Ahmed (Udhares Latheef); and Umniyya Ahmed, who worked for 25 years at Faafu Atoll Education Centre and later as a senior teacher at Ghazee School.

His grandchildren include High Court media official and former journalist Ameen Faisal, and former footballers Anwar Ali and Farhad Ismail. His great-grandchildren include Elections Commission member Abdul Haseeb Ismail.

He is remembered as a prominent community figure in Nilandhoo with a long legacy of service to his island community.
