Senior Police Sergeant Ahmed Asif, who died during an anti-drug operation at sea, has been promoted posthumously by the Maldives Police Service.

Asif was promoted to the rank of Sub-Inspector of Police today in recognition of his exemplary service, dedication and contribution to maintaining peace and security, police said today.

The officer was reported missing during an anti-drug operation in Alifu Alifu Atoll late on Wednesday night. He was among officers stationed aboard Police Launch 57 at the time of the incident.

Police said the promotion was awarded in recognition of Asif's sincere service and commitment to his duties.

A source familiar with the incident told Mihaaru News that the 33-year-old officer went missing after taking a bathroom break while on board the vessel.

Asif was part of a specialist police team deployed to conduct a drug enforcement operation in the atoll. He had served in the Drug Enforcement Department in Male' for several years.

Police said support is being provided to Asif's family and colleagues following the incident.

The circumstances surrounding his death is being investigated.
