A Police officer who was in AA. Himadhoo last night as part of a major anti-drug operation has been found dead. 

The officer had been discovered missing during an anti-drug operation carried out on the island late last night. He had been amongst officers stationed on police vessel 'Police Launch 57'. 

Police immediately launched a search for the missing officer, subsequently finding him deceased underwater. 

The officer's body has now been transferred to the AA. Mathiveri Health Centre, according to police. They said that the health centre had pronounced him deceased on arrival. 

The deceased officer is Senior Sergeant Ahmed Asif of HA. Uligan, who has worked in the Drug Enforcement Department in Male' for several years, Mihaaru News reports. 

Although Police are yet to release an official statement on the incident, Mihaaru News cites a source as revealing that Asif had gone missing after going on a bathroom break. 

Asif was part of a team of officers who had travelled to Himandhoo from Male' for the anti-drug operation. 

Police stated that in the wake of this tragedy, the service is providing necessary support to the family and colleagues of the deceased. They also confirmed that they are investigating the incident.
