Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has officially handed over land allocated for the construction of what is set to become the largest mosque in Hulhumale' to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.

The land was handed over by HDC Managing Director Ali Zuhair to Islamic Minister Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed during a ceremony held on Thursday.

The mosque will be built in the area between Hulhumale' Phase 2 and Phase 3.

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has previously signed a memorandum of understanding with Saudi Arabia's Al Rajhi foundation to finance the construction of the project.

According to the ministry, construction of the mosque was announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his presidential address and is scheduled to begin as part of commemorations marking the 900th anniversary of the Maldives' conversion to Islam.

The project is expected to commence in September this year.

In addition to the mosque, the Iconic Mosque Complex will include a Quran museum and other supporting facilities, the ministry said.
