Former Finance Minister Moosa Zameer stated last night that although he resigned from the post of minister due to his medical health condition, he will always remain behind President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in advancing the ideology of the PNC.

The government has stated that Zameer resigned from the post of minister on Monday due to his current health condition.

Speaking for the first time since resigning from the post of minister, Zameer stated at the PNC hub meeting held last night that due to his health condition, he was unable to fully and effectively execute the responsibilities required as the Finance Minister during the ongoing war situation in the Middle East.

"Therefore, under such circumstances, while I have to go to a place where I cannot stay for many days at the moment due to my health condition, I should not just hoard that position and keep clinging onto it, right?" he said.

According to Zameer, there are highly capable and young individuals within the PNC. He repeatedly gave his assurance that even though he stepped down from the position to clear space for such individuals, he will continue to remain committed to advancing the party and President Muizzu's "productive" vision.

Zameer praised the far-sighted measures taken by the President in repaying the 500 million Sukuk and saving the Maldives from its existing debt situation. In this regard, Zameer described it as a historic success that, while global financial institutions were raising questions claiming that the massive debt could not be paid back, the decision was made not to go for an IMF bailout, thereby saving the Maldives from going bankrupt.

In this administration, Zameer initially held the position of Foreign Minister. He was transferred from that post to Finance Minister in September 2024. Subsequently, in April this year, public enterprises were included within the mandate of the Ministry of Finance, expanding its mandate. Along with the changes brought to the cabinet at the time, Minister Zameer was seen as the most senior minister carrying out the work.

Zameer was also appointed as the chair of the special ministerial committee established by President Muizzu to determine the measures to be taken and identify the impacts that the war currently started in the Middle East would have on the Maldives. In addition to that, Zameer also served as the President of the Board of the Local Government Authority.
