MIFCO will now be purchasing skipjack tuna at MVR 18.50 as the price has been raised today.

MIFCO Managing Director Mohamed Anas told Mihaaru News that all of their company centers and vessels will be buying skipjack for MVR 18.50, with prices to be raised in the future according to how much will be bought.

Anas stated that this change was brought about after looking at market prices and that the aim is, as per President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's pledge, to raise the price of skipjack tuna to MVR 20.

According to Anas, private companies have been buying at MVR 18.50 as well.

MIFCO bought fish at MVR 18.50 late last year. However, due to fuel prices having gone up because of the war in the Middle East and that being the cause of negative effects to company operations, the price of fish was lowered.

After that, 1 kg of skipjack tuna was being bought for MVR 17.

As it is not the best time for fisheries, fishing has declined drastically across Maldives.

Even though MIFCO raised the price of skipjack tuna today, the purchasing price of yellowfin tuna has remained the same. The price of 10 to 15 kg of yellowfin tuna is at MVR 20, with 15 kg and above being at MVR 25.
