Former Addu City mayor Abdulla Sodiq, (Soabe), has won the Hithadhoo North parliamentary by-election, securing the seat for the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) by about 60 votes.

The by-election was contested between Sodiq and Ahmed Saeed (Soda), who represented the ruling People's National Congress (PNC).

Although the Elections Commission had not officially announced the final results yet, results so far show that Sodiq received 1,375 votes while Saeed received 1,313 votes.

The Hithadhoo North seat became vacant after the Supreme Court ruled that former PNC MP Ahmed Sinaan had lost his seat in connection with a loan repayment case.

While Sodiq secured the Hithadhoo North seat overall, PNC's Saeed won 4 out 7 ballot boxes.

A total of 4,121 voters were eligible to participate in the election, including 2,073 women and 2,048 men.
