Former Construction Minister Mauroof Jameel has introduced a special art exhibition to showcase the richness of Maldivian resort architecture in the past.

Mauroof, who held the position of Managing Director in the Housing Development Corporation in the past, introduced the art exhibition titled "Maldivian Resort Architecture: Identity, Memory and Legacy" at the National Art Gallery on Tuesday, which will conclude on 18th June.

According to him, the artwork at the exhibit shows the history of Maldivian resorts and the resort architecture from 20 years ago that has now been phased out.

"This exhibition will showcase drawings and models from architects," said Mauroof.

One of the main purposes of the exhibition is to inform the public that the earlier days of Maldivian resort architecture is an important part of history, as was said by Mauroof.

He also said that there are not a lot of architectural exhibits in Maldives currently, and that he began writing a book about planning the exhibit and Maldivian resorts as Maldivian tourism had its 50th anniversary in 2021.

"While I was conducting my studies for writing a book, I realized that a lot has been lost to time, with preparations for the exhibition having started around six to seven months ago because of that," said Mauroof.

The artwork at the exhibition shows the changes in Maldivian resorts from 1972 until 2021. Along with his own architectural blueprints, the exhibition includes resort floor plans, photos from the past and small 3D models.

He has also released a book about resort architecture at the exhibition. 

The exhibition will run until 18th June at the art gallery, with it being open daily from 10:00am to 10:00pm except on Fridays. The exhibition will only be open from 2:00pm to 10:00pm on Fridays.
