Velana International Airport (VIA) has advised travelers to use ferry and bus services over the coming days as increased traffic is expected with the return of Maldivian pilgrims from on Friday onwards.

In a travel advisory issued today, VIA said passenger numbers at the airport are expected to rise significantly as pilgrims begin arriving back in the Maldives after completing the annual pilgrimage.

According to VIA, returning pilgrims are scheduled to arrive on flights on Friday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

VIA warned that the influx of passengers and those who arrive to receive them is likely to result in heavier-than-usual traffic around the airport, including congestion in parking areas.

"As this is expected to cause congestion in airport parking areas as well as on surrounding roads, passengers are advised to use ferry or airport bus services during these days," the advisory stated.

According to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, a total of 1,019 Maldivians performed Hajj this year. The ministry said all pilgrims are in good health.
