Former President Mohamed Nasheed today pledged that he will not leave the MDP again.

Speaking at a meeting held today in Sh. Komandoo during his campaign for the chairpersonship of MDP, Nasheed stated that he knows people "have plenty of complaints to air" regarding his departure from MDP in 2023. However, he stated that MDP is his entire life and that even while staying away, his focus remained on the affairs of MDP.

"This is my home. This haruge (Komandoo campaign center) is one of the very first campaign centers. I will always want to come here. Even while away, my focus is here. I will not leave this party. If you cut me open, it will always bleed yellow," Nasheed said.

Describing MDP as an ideology and a philosophy, Nasheed stated that he cannot abandon that ideology and philosophy.

While Nasheed stated that he would not leave MDP, the main reason supporters of Meekail Ahmed Naseem, who is competing against him in the MDP chairperson election, criticize Nasheed the most is because he previously left MDP and worked against the party.

Nasheed formed a new party named "The Democrats" after leaving MDP in 2023, following his defeat in the presidential primary held by the party for the 2023 presidential election. At the time, both he and his supporters alleged that the then-President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) had influenced the election.

While "The Democrats," which Nasheed formed at the time, fielded a presidential candidate and ran a strong campaign against MDP, MDP lost that election by a margin of approximately 15,000 votes.

Nasheed and other individuals who left MDP at the time rejoined MDP last year.
