The number of confirmed measles cases in the Maldives has risen to 11 after two additional infections were detected in the Male' area last week, according to the Health Protection Agency (HPA).
HPA said last week that nine measles cases had been reported so far this year, with six infections recorded during the previous month alone. The latest cases bring the total to 11.
Measles, a highly contagious viral disease that had previously been eliminated in the Maldives, can initially present with symptoms similar to common illnesses.
Common symptoms include:
- Fever
- Red skin rashes
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red or watery eyes
Health officials have warned that while symptoms may appear mild at first, measles can lead to serious and potentially life-threatening complications, including pneumonia and vision-related problems.
Maldives protects against measles through a two-dose vaccination programme. The first dose is administered at nine months of age, while the second is given when a child reaches 18 months.
In response to the recent cases, HPA is preparing a campaign to vaccinate individuals who have not completed the recommended two-dose schedule.
Health authorities have also noted a rise in measles infections globally and in neighboring countries, increasing the risk of imported cases and local transmission.
