Prices of onions and eggs have increased in local markets as adverse weather conditions continue to affect transportation and the supply of goods.
The price of onions, which previously sold for around MVR 8 per kilogram, has risen to about MVR 25 per kilogram. Egg prices have also increased, with individual eggs now selling for between MVR 2.50 and MVR 3, compared with the previous price of MVR 1.75.
An official from the State Trading Organization told Mihaaru News that the company has not experienced any shortage of onions despite difficulties reported by retailers in Male'.
The official said STO continues to sell onions at the previous price and that another shipment is expected to arrive soon.
According to the latest figures released by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), 8,591 sacks of onions and 14,228 cases of eggs were cleared from the commercial harbour during the past week.
The statistics also show that 4,796 sacks of potatoes were released during the same period, with no delays reported in the clearance of imported goods, MPL said.
